Sankofa Roots
Sankofa Roots is a land-based learning and healing organization that connects Black, Indigenous and Queer communities with outdoor experiences that build critical skills for outdoor preparedness and climate resilience, while healing our relationship to land and lineage.
We cultivate community resilience through offering hands-on earth skills and survival trainings, while invoking ancestral wisdoms rooted in our lineages to guide our learning, and cultivating sustainable land-based practices with future generations in mind. We are based in the SF Bay Area.
building community resilience in the face of uncertainty
We seek to equip as many people as possible with the skills needed to survive and thrive in outdoor conditions, particularly communities on the frontlines of climate crisis, housing displacement and political instability.

who we serve
Our trainings are curated specifically for people who identify as Black, Indigenous and/or Queer.
For us, it’s critical to create safe learning and healing spaces for our people, where we can be alongside others who share intersecting identities and stories of resilience and survival.
Black, Indigenous and Queer communities have a unique relationship to land displacement and climate disaster in this country that Sankofa Roots seeks to heal.
As Black, Indigenous and Queer folks, we see this as intergenerational work, and we seek to transform and heal our relationship to the land through our collective learning and practice.
our commitment to accessibility
sliding scale options
We provide all participants with free equipment during training, including tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, head lamps, hygiene products, food and water.
In addition, our trainings are offered at an affordable, sliding scale price, because we believe in uprooting capitalist barriers that prevent access to learning essential survival skills.
our commitment to disability justice
People of all abilities are welcome to attend our trainings. We understand the intersections between climate preparedness and disability justice, and the ways climate collapse (and political and housing instability) disproportionately affects our disabled communities. We also understand that many of our trainings require physical capacities specific to working in rigorous wilderness terrains, and may not feel accessible to all bodies. Please trust that our intention is centered on growing capacity to support disabled communities in future instances of crises.
We encourage all participants to care for your bodies, spirit, stamina and recovery during our time together. Ask for what you need and offer what you can.
covid-19 protocols
Our classes primarily take place outdoors. Because of this, we feel confident that we are able to provide the safest group experiences available during this time.
At this time, California has lifted all mask requirements for outdoor programs. You are welcome to wear one if it makes you more comfortable, but it is not required. During every training, we have masks and COVID-19 rapid tests on site.
If you experience any symptoms of COVID-19, we ask that you stay at home to heal and recover. If anyone close to you is experiencing symptoms, or if anyone close to you has recently tested positive, we require that you get tested before joining a training.
